Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, referred to as CTAC, is a quaternary ammonium salt compound. It appears as a white crystalline solid powder, and its common form is anhydrous or salt containing less crystal water. CTAC can be dissolved in water, alcohol and organic solvents, but its solubility in non-polar solvents is poor, and its 1% aqueous solution has a pH value of 6-8. It is heat-resistant, light-resistant, and resistant to strong acids and alkalis. As a cationic surfactant, it has good surface activity, stability and biodegradability.

• Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride is a highly efficient cationic bactericide used for disinfection of hospital equipment, laboratory equipment and public places. It can kill bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms, and has both cleaning and antibacterial functions.
• CTAC is used as a flocculant and bactericide for water purification. It can condense suspended matter in water and inhibit algae reproduction. It is often used in industrial circulating water and sewage treatment systems.
• Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride is used as a fabric softening antistatic agent to give the fiber a smooth feel, reduce static electricity accumulation during weaving, and improve fabric wearing comfort and processing performance.
• As an emulsifier in asphalt emulsification, it improves the compatibility of asphalt and water and is used in road construction; it can also be used as an antistatic agent in plastic processing to reduce the surface resistance of polymer materials.
